Shingles is a painful blistering skin rash caused by the varicella-zoster virus.

The slightest touch can cause an intense burning sensation, while severe nerve pain lasting months or even years after the rash has disappeared is also common.

Anybody can contract shingles, but it is particularly devastating for those over 50. And as you age, the risk of contracting shingles increases exponentially. If you are 80+ you are most at risk.

Is shingles related to chickenpox?

Yes. Shingles is caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox. If you’ve had chickenpox your immune system has kept the shingles virus hidden. No one knows what triggers it to cause shingles

How effective is Shingrix compared to Zostavax?

It is significantly better.  Shingrix reduces the risk of getting shingles by over 97% across all ages. Zostavax reduces the risk of getting shingles by 51%. Shingrix also maintains its efficacy as people age, Zostavax becomes less effective

I've already taken Zostavax, do I need a Shingrix shot?
