What is it?

Japanese encephalitis (JE) is a potentially fatal viral infection spread by the bite of an infected Culex mosquito

JE is the leading cause of childhood viral neurological infection and disability in Asia

What are the symptoms?

Symptoms vary depending on the severity of the illness

Most people with JE experience mild symptoms such as fever and headache

Less than 1% of JE infections result in symptomatic neuro-invasive disease, but of those many are fatal or result in long term neurological problems

How can I contract Japanese encephalitis?

From the bite of an infected Culex mosquito

The mosquito becomes infected after biting an infected animal, such as a pig or a wading bird, which then acts as a host for the virus

Where can I contract it?

Most Asian countries including India, and some parts of eastern Russia

What vaccines are available?

Ixiaro™ is available in Canada and is a safe and effective vaccine

How many shots will I need?

Two doses spaced 28 days apart, but there is an alternate schedule done over a week for those who don’t have time

Will I need a booster?

Yes

Ixiaro™ provides protection for up to 2 years. A booster after 18 months typically ensures immunity for 10 years

How can I prevent JE?

Use insecticide sprays and insect repellents containing DEET or Icaridin

Limit outdoor activities at night, wearing permethrin-treated clothing and sleep in screened or air-conditioned areas or under permethrin-treated mosquito nets

What is the treatment for Japanese encephalitis?

There is no treatment
