We are happy to announce that for the upcoming flu season we will have a vaccine available that might appeal to the needlephobes among you. Flumist is a flu vaccine sprayed into the nose, no poking with needles required. If you think this might be something for you, please read on.
Who can be vaccinated with Flumist?
- Anyone between the ages of 2 and 59 who is generally healthy and not pregnant.
- People who are afraid of needles.
What are the side effects?
Side effects are usually minor, although they can be more severe than the side effects of the flu shot. In adults, side effects include runny nose, headache, sore throat, and cough; in children, side effects also include wheezing, vomiting, fever, and muscle aches.
Who cannot have Flumist?
- Children under 2 years old
- Children under 5 who have a history of wheezing
- Children or adolescents who are taking aspirin
- Adults 60 years old or above
- Adults who have heart disease, lung disease (like asthma), diabetes, kidney disease, Guillain-Barré syndrome, or an immune system weakened by disease or by its treatment
- Anyone with a history of a severe allergic reaction to eggs or a previous flu vaccine
- Pregnant women
- People who are in contact with someone who has an immune system severely weakened by a treatment, such as a stem cell transplant; it is safe to get this vaccine if you’re in contact with people who have less severely suppressed immune systems, like people with diabetes or HIV.
Can I pass the virus on to others after receiving the vaccine?
This can happen, but is rare and because the virus is weakened, infection is unlikely to result in influenza illness symptoms.
Does Flumist contain thimerosal?
No, Flumist does not contain thimerosal or any other preservative.
How much does Flumist cost?
The cost for Flumist is $35 per dose. Children 2-9 years who have not previously been vaccinated require 2 doses spaced 1 month apart.
