National Advisory Committee on Immunizations Releases Statement on Seasonal Influenza Vaccines

The NACI (National Advisory Committee on Immunizations) just published a Statement on Seasonal Influenza Vaccine at http://www.phac-aspc.gc.ca/publicat/ccdr-rmtc/11vol37/acs-dcc-5/index-eng.php.  Interested members of the public are invited to inform themselves about the Influenza Vaccine.

A couple of key points to note:

  • Egg allergy no longer deemed to be a contraindication for influenza vaccine
  • NACI “encourages influenza vaccine for all Canadians” (see section V.2)
  • “Employers and their employees should consider yearly influenza immunization for healthy working adults, as this has been shown to decrease work absenteeism due to respiratory and other illnesses” (sect. V.2.3).
  • In Section V.3 you can find a good discussion on choice of products for various groups.
  • Section IV.1.3 has a background information about FluMist, the needleless vaccine.
